Bubbles 10015 Makes a Splash: Rookie All-Star & Winner at Newmarket Week 1

Starting your rookie FRC season in Week 1 is no easy task—but Team Bubbles 10015 didn’t just show up to the Newmarket District Event, they made waves. In their official debut, Bubbles earned the coveted Rookie All-Star Award, establishing themselves as one of Ontario’s most promising new teams—and then capped off the weekend by winning the entire event.

With FIRST Kickoff held on January 6th, most teams were still finalizing designs and solving last-minute bugs. But Bubbles, a rookie team from York Region powered by SolversMind Robotics, defied expectations by designing, building, wiring, coding, and testing a competition-ready robot in just five weeks.

“It’s already ambitious to compete in a Week 1 event as a rookie,” said lead mentor Mr. Dahai Zhang. “To win Rookie All-Star and take home the event championship? These students blew everyone away.”

Their victory was made possible alongside alliance partners Team 5409 Charger and Team 4946 Alpha Dogs, who believed in Bubbles’ strategic value, student-led spirit, and exceptional defensive gameplay. In a thrilling elimination run, Bubbles played a critical role in shutting down high-scoring opponents, giving their alliance the edge needed to win it all.

“We couldn’t believe it,” said team captain Ryan Zhang. “We started this journey learning everything from scratch—from drivetrain design to scouting. But we never gave up. We supported each other, played smart, and stayed calm under pressure. That’s what Bubbles is about—rising when it matters most.”

The Rookie All-Star Award is presented to teams that demonstrate strong potential for long-term success through outreach, team culture, technical excellence, and alignment with FIRST values. Judges highlighted Bubbles’ fully student-led approach, early mentorship efforts, and their clear vision for sustainability and impact.

With their first blue banner and a championship trophy in hand, Bubbles now sets their sights on the Durham College District Event, ready to keep proving that their Week 1 performance was no fluke—but the beginning of something special.
