Why did Bubbles win the Industrial Design Award?

FRC Team 10015 Bubbles earned the Industrial Design Award at the 2026 FIRST Ontario Provincial Championship Science Division in Niagara Falls. The award recognizes a robot that balances form, function, and aesthetics through an elegant, efficient, and practical design. For Bubbles, the recognition reflected far more than appearance. It celebrated the students’ ability to integrate the robot’s mechanisms into a clean, distinctive, and competition-ready system built from accessible components and refined through repeated testing. Winning at Ontario’s highest-level FRC competition was especially meaningful for a community-based team competing in only its second season. Led by student captain Ryan Zhang, the team demonstrated how thoughtful engineering decisions, careful manufacturing, programming, driver feedback, and continuous iteration can work together as one complete design process. The award marked a major step in Bubbles’ technical growth and helped carry the team’s momentum from the Ontario Provincial Championship to its second consecutive appearance at the FIRST Championship.

What does the Industrial Design Award recognize?

The FIRST Industrial Design Award celebrates a robot that successfully balances form, function, and aesthetics.

Judges look beyond one impressive mechanism. They evaluate the complete machine and consider whether the robot is elegant, efficient, practical, distinctive, and thoughtfully integrated.

For Bubbles, the award recognized how the students designed the robot as one complete system. Each mechanism needed to perform its intended task while remaining simple enough to manufacture, maintain, test, and improve throughout the competition season.

The judges highlighted the robot’s distinctive appearance, extensive design iterations, use of simple components and materials, and clean engineering decisions. Their comments captured the philosophy behind the robot: thoughtful design does not need to be unnecessarily complicated to be effective.

How did iteration shape the design of the Bubbles robot?

The final robot was not the result of one idea or one build.

Throughout the season, Bubbles students continuously evaluated the robot’s performance, identified weaknesses, tested improvements, and refined the design. Mechanical students worked closely with programmers, drivers, and strategy members so that every design decision reflected what the robot needed to accomplish on the field.

The team learned to balance several important priorities:

  • Reliable and repeatable operation

  • Efficient use of space and materials

  • Easy maintenance between matches

  • Clean integration between mechanisms

  • Practical manufacturing and assembly

  • A distinctive and recognizable robot design

This process encouraged students to think beyond whether a mechanism could work once. They considered whether it could perform consistently, survive competition, and be repaired or adjusted quickly when necessary.

That combination of creativity, practicality, and continuous improvement became one of the robot’s greatest strengths.

Why was this award meaningful for a second-year FRC team?

Winning the Industrial Design Award in the highly competitive Science Division was an incredible achievement for Bubbles.

FRC Team 10015 was established in 2025 as a community-based team in Aurora, Ontario. In its rookie season, Bubbles reached the FIRST Championship and earned the Rookie All-Star Award on the world stage.

Only one year later, the students returned to the Ontario Provincial Championship with a rebuilt team, a new robot, and much higher expectations. Receiving an award based on the design of the entire machine demonstrated how quickly the team had grown in mechanical engineering, manufacturing, programming, testing, strategy, and technical communication.

The achievement belonged to every student who contributed ideas, manufactured parts, assembled mechanisms, wrote code, tested the robot, documented changes, drove during matches, or explained the engineering process to the judges.

It also reflected the guidance of the team’s mentors and the support of families, sponsors, and the Aurora community.
