What is SolversMind Robotics’ mission?

SolversMind Robotics' mission is to help students in Aurora, Newmarket, Richmond Hill, Markham, Vaughan, and nearby York Region communities grow through hands-on robotics, coding, engineering design, teamwork, and FIRST robotics competition experiences. Through FLL, FTC, and FRC pathways, students learn to design, build, program, test, present, and improve real robot projects while developing confidence, leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. SolversMind supports students from early robotics learners to advanced competitors, including FIRST LEGO League teams, FLL Team 52777 Solvers of X & Y, and FRC Team 10015 Bubbles. The goal is not only to win awards, but to give young people a place to explore STEM, mentor one another, work through setbacks, and represent their community with pride. How does the mission work in practice?

SolversMind’s mission is to use robotics as a practical path for building capable, confident, and thoughtful young people. Students research, design, build, program, manufacture, test, troubleshoot, document, present, and improve real projects. Coaches provide technical instruction, structured training, safety supervision, questions, and feedback while students apply what they learn and take ownership of the work.

How does SolversMind train students?

Students come first

We do not use coach-completed work as a shortcut to competition results. Students take meaningful ownership of research, problem definition, robot and mechanism design, CAD, manufacturing, electrical integration, programming, testing, documentation, match strategy, Innovation Projects, judging presentations, fundraising, and community outreach. This process develops understanding, responsibility, independence, and confidence.

Training continues throughout the year

The offseason is where knowledge is built. Students practise programming, mechanical design, CAD, electronics, sensors, artificial intelligence, research, technical communication, manufacturing, and project management without immediate competition pressure. When the season begins, they are ready to make decisions, test ideas, diagnose problems, and improve their own designs.

First-principles and critical thinking

Coach Dahai Zhang promotes first-principles thinking throughout SolversMind training. Students break complicated problems into basic elements: what they are trying to accomplish, what is known to be true, which forces and constraints are involved, which assumptions they are making, why a solution works or fails, and what evidence supports a decision. A robot mechanism becomes easier to understand when students examine forces, motion, geometry, materials, and constraints. A programming problem becomes clearer when they identify inputs, outputs, conditions, feedback, and expected behaviour. Students learn not only how to find an answer, but how to question, test, defend, and improve it.

The Feynman Technique

Students do not fully understand a concept until they can explain it clearly in their own words. They prepare short presentations about mechanisms, programs, design decisions, technical failures, testing data, personal contributions, and team decisions. When an explanation reveals a gap, the student returns to the concept, asks questions, studies it again, and presents it another way. Repeated explanation builds deeper understanding, stronger public speaking, logical organization, confidence under pressure, and the ability to answer unexpected questions.

What robotics pathway does SolversMind provide?

FIRST LEGO League

FLL students learn LEGO robot design, programming, Robot Game strategy, Innovation Project research, teamwork, presentation, and FIRST Core Values. They begin developing mechanical reasoning, coding habits, confidence, creativity, and communication skills.

FIRST Tech Challenge

FTC introduces more advanced robot construction, CAD, mechanical systems, electronics, programming, manufacturing, documentation, and competition strategy. Students work with larger technical systems while accepting greater responsibility for design and project decisions.

FIRST Robotics Competition

Through FRC Team 10015 Bubbles, experienced students take on complex engineering challenges involving full-scale robot design, CAD, manufacturing, electrical integration, advanced programming, autonomous control, strategy, fundraising, sponsorship, outreach, and team leadership. Knowledge, responsibility, and leadership develop over several years rather than one short competition season.

Programs are designed for students ages 6–18, from beginners exploring robotics for the first time to experienced students preparing for advanced FIRST competitions. Students do not need to begin as experts. They need curiosity, commitment, a willingness to learn, and the courage to keep improving.

Awards, championships, and competition results are meaningful because they recognize effort and growth. They are not the final purpose of SolversMind training. The real achievement is a student who can approach an unfamiliar problem without fear, break it into logical parts, learn the necessary knowledge, build and test a solution, recognize and correct mistakes, explain the work clearly, accept responsibility, help others grow, and lead with confidence and integrity. Students come first. Learning comes before awards. Understanding comes before memorization. Leadership grows through real responsibility.
